Dear Hotasi Nababan

I am very happy when I received your letter and a few books. Now you will have been staying in metropolitant capitalism or the centre of capitalism in the world. I believe that you have relized this. And of course you have set the shield in yourself against the influence of American style. If you are not careful, you can lose your consciousness. I hope, you will not only be a clever man but also intellectual. Our country needs a number of intellectuals to make some changes toward the prosperity. Perhaps, you have known before that so many intellectuals in Indonesia but they can do nothing because they have no courages to say the truth. Of course they are still better if we compare with intellectuals who never know that they have to make some changes. And I call those intellectuals as intellectuals who have no consciousness upon themselves.

Time goes by, and so you continue to reach your ideal, with all facilities those you had but had never been belonged to the common people. I can only say that you are actually a lucky person in the societal structure of Indonesia. But you must remember, those come to the world is not by the chance. All matters come into being because of the human being’s hand. Therefore, if you want your people to be like you, there is no other choise except to change the societal structure of Indonesia especially in the field of economic and political development toward economic and political justice. They will bring us to the social justice that always we hope, and we never stop doing to attain it. It is our obligations and our rights at once!

You will stay over there for a long time, but I belive that you will not forget your country. I believe that you love your people and so I believe that you will do the best for them, won’t you? The history will never end until God make it ruin. And now we are exist in the frame of history and furthermore we have to drive this history. To make the structural change is not an easy task. It will entail more sacrifices and faithfulness of our ways.

To remember what we have done in campus or elsewhere is not useful any way without thinking about what we are going to do. I hope that we will continue struggle in the rigth path. Although we are in the different places but we have the same ideal. And I hope we never change our ideal that is to build our country toward the prosperity which there is no exploitation of man by man and also there is no exploitation of man by state.

Inside the jail, I always continue to improve my intellectual adventure. I am not in anguish at all and one day absolutely I will be free as the same as before. I will keep in touch with my ideal that I have arranged before, and I believe one day I will reach it.

If you have no any objections, it will make me happy if you could send me a few books about the studies of welfare-state especially the studies of Scandinavian literatures including the experiences of economics, politics, culture and social thought.

Before I finish this letter, once more I want to say to you that your country is waiting for your coming, your special attention and so forth...

With Warm Regards,

Moh Jumhur Hidayat
